3/28/12 - Three biomedical research students tour research facilities and prepare for CSF presentation scheduled for April 16, 2012, at 6:00 pm. Dr. Donna Sullivan (Professor, Medicine & Microbiology; Division, Infectious Diseases) lead the tour and worked with students on their presentation.

Part of the tour involved viewing the showcase of Dr. Arthur C. Guyton (1919 - 2003). Guyton was born in Oxford, MS, and became a physiologist. Guyton's Textbook of Medical Physiology became a household name in medical schools. He received his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1943. Dr. Guyton initially intended to be a cardiovascular surgeon but was infected with polio in 1947. Due to his disability, he had to abandon his plan to become a surgeon and concentrated on physiology research and teaching. He became the head of the University of Mississippi Dept. of Physiology and Biophysics and retired as department chair in 1989. The first motorized wheelchair he built is in the showcase behind Grover.

Students practice their presentation in a medical lecture hall.

Dr. Sullivan's lab contained some of the same buffer dilutions that students' work with in their biomedical lab protocols at Enterprise.

Students view current PCR technology.

UMMC has one of the few Biosafety Level 3 Labs in the state. Scientists have worked with anthrax in this lab.
